Mid Winter in Kansas City

We were promised a wet and cold winter. However, with the exception of one week, Kansas City has had little cold, but lots of wet. But remember that winter isn’t over yet and spring is still over a month and a half away! Also, it is so easy to believe that, because it is cold, no “bugs” are out and about. The ones inside don’t feel the cold.

In the last installment of our blog, I spoke of typical mid-winter pest problems. Remember that this is the time when carpet beetles may be multiplying and attacking your seasonal clothing which have been stored without proper cleaning or laundering. Cold weather clothing, often made of animal products such as fur, wool, and leather, is out and in current use, but some stored warm weather clothing also contains products of animal origin, like silk. If you have had a carpet beetle problem that hasn’t been taken care of, you need to check things out!

Also, we all know how easy it is to let a pantry “get out of control”. Periodically check to see that any spillage has been thoroughly cleaned up. Remember, only vacuum, not just move it around with a brush or air pressure. This is not the time or place to use a can of pressurized keyboard cleaner!

With the relatively mild weather so far, it may not be long before we begin to see fresh termite tube-building, or even swarming. Rains, rather than snows, could hasten this process. If you think that it’s too early for spring, I found daffodils just popping their heads above ground yesterday, February the first!

Late Fall in Kansas City

Although winter may be just around the corner in Kansas City, now is not the time to forget about insects, spiders and such. Don’t believe for one moment that they are all gone for a few months. To the contrary; pantry and clothes pests do not recognize seasons!

These pests love clutter – spilled cereal and spices in the pantry and clothing carelessly strewn on the floor in the closet are prime breeding grounds for them. Another problem arises when we move seasonal clothing to storage without first laundering or dry cleaning it. Tidying up the pantry, discarding old, open containers of spices, flour, pasta, crackers and cereals can eliminate a potentially serious problem before it even gets started. Simply placing fresh, but partially-used, quantities in pest-proof containers will go far in preventing future pest problems. But don’t forget to brush up, mop up or vacuum any spillage. It is amazing to learn what pests consider food.

The garage and basement also deserve attention. The garage is continuously subjected to the accumulation of leaves blown in and mud or other substances tracked in by vehicles, pets and us. All of this provides food and harborage for a wide variety of arthropod pests and rodents.

Basements are subject to pests from many sources. They may be brought in with stored items of every description. Cockroaches and rodents may enter through floor drains. They may enter through utility penetrations above and below ground as well as between the foundation or siding. All of the above-mentioned areas deserve your attention at all times.

Late Summer in Kansas City

As we move into late summer in Kansas City, don’t believe that the pests will soon go away. To the contrary, some nuisances will just begin to show up. Pests such as boxelder bugs, cluster flies and multi-colored Asian lady beetles will soon begin showing up in great numbers all over the sides of your home, looking for a place to hibernate. If you haven’t prepared for this, do it NOW!

Just because the screens and storm windows are in place doesn’t mean that they are completely effective. Are there any rips, tears or punctures in the screen mesh? Do their frames fit tightly in the main window frames? Did you follow through on your Spring promise to seal up all the cracks and crevices around windows, doors and board and batten junctions? On the first really cool mornings, after you have carefully examined the exterior, hold your hand up to all of the electrical receptacles on the inside of exterior walls. If you feel a draft or any difference in the temperature, it means that air is getting into your walls from outside. If air can get in, so can bugs!

Keep in mind that all of these situations also have a direct effect upon your heating and cooling bills. If you don’t have the time to fix these situations, Call Augustine Services. They have highly trained people who can. The telephone numbers are (913)-362-4399 or (816) 421-6882
